I’ve been pretty silent on tumblr recently. I’ll tell you why. Things are a-changin and it’s great!!
First of all, my movie watching did nto stop after Boondock Saints 2. The films I’ve seen since then include The Box (eh), Pirate Radio (enjoyable), 2012 (another disaster movie that looked better than it was), Twilight: New Moon (after so much hype, I hoped for better), Christmas Carol (in IMAX 3D, really fun), Precious (really good), Men Who Stare at Goats (kinda funny), The Fourth Kind (kinda disturbing) , This Is It (could watch this over and over again) , Inglourious Basterds (for a 3rd time since Ashley didn’t see it), 12 Monkeys (classic) , most of Cirque du Freak: Vampire’s Assistant, and of course Fantastic Mr. Fox. Aside from these that I saw in theatres, I also saw Away We Go, The Girlfriend Experience, The Omega Man, Once Upon a Time in the West, and High Fidelity on DVD.
Fantastic Mr. Fox was really good by the way. I really enjoyed it. It looked amazing. I read in LA Weekly that they avoided digital effects of any kind as much as possible and put a lot of time into making the little sets just right. It shows and looks great. I love Wes Anderson as well as the book by Roald Dahl (well, when I was a kid anyways). The dysfunctional family was of course present, as it is in all Wes Anderson movies, but in a way left everyone happy at the end, more so than his other films, which was nice. It’s a fun little family film.
In regards to the changes in my life, it all really started because of my working at the American Film Market in Santa Monica a few weeks ago. I sent around 150-200 emails the week before the market asking exhibitors if they needed help. For those who don’t know, the AFM is one of the largest independent film markets in the world. Anyone who is anyone in the indie film world is there (companies that is) buying and selling film rights. I was lucky enough to get picked up by a British company called Independent Film. They are responsible for selling titles like Moon. They also have a production arm that is doing a feature with Tilda Swinton, among other things. They were great to work for and since I was there working for them I got access to the entire market. This was the best thing ever. I got to work in the actual film industry. The films I heard people talk about there are what we will be seeing in indie film for the next year. I met people from companies I would love to end up at like Focus, Lionsgate, and Sony. I also got to learn loads about film sales. The people at Independent were so helpful in teaching me about what they were doing. I got to see how deals go down. It’s an interesting process to be sure. I woundn’t mind going into film sales.
So anyway, I got a number of responses from my e-mail, some of which were saying no to the market but yes to something in the future. These were some of the companies that I spoke with in person at the market to put a face to my e-mails. A few companies seemed very interested in me, which was great, and this market gave me this great opportunity to meet them professionally instead of just cold calling or stopping in an office somewhere.
So after the market, I was offered a job from a company called Brand-in Entertainment!! They do like product placement in movies and tv, basically brand integration. They’ve got an office in Marina Del Rey so I’ll be working there part-time M-F! So I’m working in entertainment now for real! My first day is Monday and I’m so excited to finally start. It’s taken me like 5 months to land a steady gig. Hopefully this is the start of me not being dirt poor and just regular poor, as I will continue to work at the movie theatre as well. Wish me luck.
and Happy Thanksgiving!
Next up, probably Old Dogs (even though I’ve heard it had atrocious reviews) and The Road.

2 notes

Saw this today at the Burbank Town Center AMC. It was friggin sweet. I can’t help but enjoy stylized violence sometimes. And it was pretty funny as well. I even laughed out loud, which doesn’t happen all that often at movies. So if you liked the first one, you’ll probably like this one as well. This movie, as well as the first one, always makes me wish I had a brother to kick ass with (like I would kick people’s asses, well, maybe if I had a brother I would!! though my sister could probably kick my ass, so I don’t have much of a excuse). And it’s funny that this movie containing stylized violence is about guys who are trying to imitate movies that contain the same violence, though it usually doesn’t work out right.
So yeah, see it. On another note, today felt more like a birthday worthy day, as I had the day off. My gf and I enjoyed a nice nap, tasty KFC boxes, went to a haunted house in Burbank (that was actually quite scary and awesome), then to IKEA (finally made it out to where some friends make IKEA Heights), and then to this movie. Also got a call from a company in England who might hire me at the American Film Market. Just a good day. It was a great distraction from the ever increasing pressure from not making ends meet. Tomorrow, back to work. But I’m seeing This is It in IMAX real soon. Let me know if you wanna come.

I went and saw this on the eve of my birthday, Halloween, at Citywalk. It was pretty fun. I forgot how much I enjoyed Toy Story and seeing them in 3D was kinda cool, though probably not really necessary. And walking around Citywalk is always fun, especially since it was Halloween when we got out (saw a late show). Unfortunately, I was feeling kinda sick and after getting back at like 3:00 am and getting around 3 measly hours of sleep, I had to work all day.
Work wasn’t bad. My boss bought lunch, which was really nice. My girlfriend however, was the one who really made my birthday something special. She made me a beautiful cake and delicious dinner, and even got me a present. It’s nice to have someone care about you enough to do things like that. If it wasn’t for her, I probably would have done nothing, which is no way to spend a birthday right? We were gonna go out, but were too tired and spent the evening watching The Descent, the newest episodes of The Office and Community (loved ‘em both), and taking phone calls and getting facebook messages from friends and family wishing me well. It was a really nice little birthday evening, even if it wasn’t very festive as far as Halloween goes. I’m sure next year, when I have enough cash to live, we’ll be able to go out and do something fun. I’m also really looking forward to making some better friends. Having no dispensable income, I can’t even go out with the friends I have, not that I really hear from them much, which is fine. We all got our own things going. It will just be nice when I have some good closer friends to do things with and count on.  So anyway, thank God for wonderful girlfriends, cause they make your life much better, even if they eat your candy and take time away from video games.
Today, we actually were more festive! but I’ll save that for the next post.

Somehow, I had never see this movie before. Luckily, I had a chance the friday night before last for the midnight movie at the Regency Fairfax.
I liked it. I had read about it in studies about Spielberg and it was a lot of fun. Scary 80’s movies with cheesy effects are the great! Here’s a little not-so-fun fact that you may or may not have already known. The little girl died at the age of 12! She died of a heart attack toward the end of shooting Poltergeist III. Sucky and sad.

I finally saw this at the Avco Center last week. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Some people left the movie pretty freaked out. Some were just like whatever. One guy, after sitting in the theatre for 10 minutes after the movie was over, said, “it was like Toy’s R Us without the toys.” This still doesn’t make sense. Maybe he meant Toy Story which would have made a little more sense I guess. He was probably just drunk.
After the movie got going, it was pretty much what I expected. Pretty creepy. Haunting ending that kind of sticks with you. What is more amazing to me is how this movie is doing at the box office. It’s already made over 410,000% of what it cost to make (only $15,000, though that doesn’t include marketing costs). I believe it broke the record for profitability percentage wise (Titanic still hods the most $ profit record). I wonder if we’ll see some other very cheaply made films make it through the studio system in efforts to repeat this phenomenon.  Nothin beats word-of-mouth hype, that’s for sure. I’m sure we’ll see some of these low budget handheld type films at the American Film Market (http://www.ifta-online.org/afm/home.asp) that’s coming up this week in Santa Monica. I’m desperately trying to work this event with some company. I sent out e-mails to almost every Exhibitor (around 150-200 emails or something), seeing if they needed help. I’ve gotten a few nibbles, but nothing for sure yet. I’ve got some meetings on Tuesday with people, both for Market and non-Market stuff. These meetings could change my life. I’m pretty pumped. Wish me luck! I hope they take a chance on me like they took a chance DreamWorks did on Paranormal Activity.

Saw this yesterday in Santa Monica at the Broadway 4 AMC (btw, one of the most uncomfortable theatres I have been to ever). I liked the movie. It was very Coen Bros-y, with it’s quirky kind of dark humor. It was also very Jewish. The entire story is about a Jewish family, I believe in an earlier era (maybe how Coen Bros remembered growing up?) Some of the terms I didn’t quite understand and I’m not sure exactly how the beginning tied in to everything. Maybe if I knew more Jewish culture I would get it more, but I don’t know. I think this one might need another watch. It had the theme of everything always changes and just when you think everything is gonna be fine, something else happens, and that’s just life. I like it. Not my fav Coen Bros. I didn’t feel it was a “career-topping stunner” like Esquire did, but maybe it wasn’t for me. Maybe this one was made for older people who get this upbringing more than I do. But I liked it.

This movie is soooooooooooooooo good!!! I’ve been excited for it for a while and after finally seeing it, it really was as good as I hoped. It’s so intense and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
I need to start writing these sooner after I see the movie. I keep forgetting everything I want to say about it. oh well

Sucked. If you see the trailer, you saw the movie, so don’t waste anymore time. Never saw the remake, so I don’t really know how it compares. I just know there was nothing special about this movie at all. It was dumb. Mediocre acting, bad script, and not scary.

Screened this almost a week ago. It was fun. I laughed a lot. It was very heartfelt. The kid who played Max was great, I was impressed. Reminded me of being a child and just wanting that love and attention from mom. I encourage those who enjoyed the book as a child to see it.
PS. Seeing it in IMAX is most unnecessary.
