i'm stuart. i like things too.

Saw Haywire at the “Secret Screening” for AFI fest. Gina Carano could be the next Angelina. Super bad ass. Really enjoyed the film (and the Q&A with Soderbergh, Fassbender, McGregor, Carano, and…. Joel McHale moderated).

Sometimes I forgot how cool where I live actually is. I saw this film today at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre at the AFI Fest that’s going on right now. Everyone gets a certain amount of free tickets to screenings which is great (though I did wait in line like an 45 minutes to make sure I got a decent seat). So anyway, I wanted to check this film out because I had the opportunity to read the script a while back for work and it was pretty good, and I love Woody Harrelson, so I figured “what the hey.” It’s one of my favorite things to have read a script, even if we didn’t end up working on it at my job like this one, and then getting to see it come to life on the big screen. It’s happened a few times now and definitely makes me feel like I’m somewhat a part of the action.
The director, Oren Moverman, Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster, Robin Wright, and other cast and crew were all at the screening and Moverman did an intro with them before the screening (supercool). I enjoyed the film (particularly Woody’s character), as well as a movie conversation with the guy sitting next to me, who is a film writer for a major South American publication.
I got out of the film at like midnight and walked through Hollywood to my car and suddenly felt like, “stuart, what are you doing, you are in los angeles, why are you not doing something more creative/productive/SOMETHING.” I have these mini-freakouts from time to time. While these freak-outs are probably not sooo justified, as I am making progress, I need to re-light the fire within myself. I get to do some pretty cool stuff. No need to get complacent about it. Time to do cooler stuff. What that is or what it all means is beyond on me at this point. I just get that feeling that “something” is coming (anyone see Take Shelter other than me and my new film writer buddy?)

This video of Afterburner from Futurecop!’s great new EP is oddly fascinating. It has no real rhyme or reason, just 80’s fun.

I found this on my electro-pop search after seeing Drive. While Futurecop! is not in that movie at all, they probably should be in all movies. I like most of their songs, but this one is probably my fav.

this song from Drive (which I think might be one of my favorite movies this year) has led me on path of electro-pop that is pretty much all i listen to lately. Love it

Watched Howl last night. Really fascinating stuff. I knew who Allen Ginsberg was and about the poem “Howl”  but not what it actually is. The film was based on the court case, interviews with Ginsberg, and the poem itself. I think the part that had the biggest impact on me was when Ginsberg was saying how good writing always comes from the person and is very personal. He said in the beginning, he would only write things as if it was something his parents (“daddy”) would read and approve of. But this was not very interesting. If you are writing for other people and not putting yourself in the writing, it will never be quite that interesting. This makes so much sense.
I think I am guilty of being worried about the perception of others in the things that I write and work on. Not that I write very much. I need to not hold back. I vow not to hold back.

this feels like me right now

I watched Exit Through the Gift Shop the other day finally. It’s really cool if you haven’t seen it. I’ve never been one to know about graffiti and that sort of “underground-y” type stuff, but it was fascinating.
I especially liked the whole “OBEY” thing (Space Invader was another one). For those who don’t know, this guy Shepard Fairey basically just puts this image (like in the pic) up in random places around the world. It doesn’t really mean a whole lot of anything but the idea is that it will keep popping up. People can make of it what they will, but the goal is to get people curious and kind of more aware of their surroundings.
I’m very much on board with this idea, like how you see stuff written in the bathroom in some bar and wonder where it came from and what led that person to write it (Why is Jenny a slut? Will she really sleep with anyone?). Or when you see drawings on desks/buses. And then the times I see the same image (like the OBEY thing) it makes me feel like there’s some sort of connection with that person. They were in the same place that I was more than once. The world gets a little bit smaller.
I need to come up with an image (*adds to list of all things I pretend I’m gonna actually do).
