Netflixed this great 1967 film after the Production Manager for Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs told me I should know who Buñuel (the director) was. For those who don’t know, it turns out he’s an amazing Spanish director who is known as being the father of cinematic Surrealism. The film, though very economical as far as shots and music (in fact I don’t think there was any real score), was absolutely fascinating. It’s about a woman (Catherine Deneuve) who can’t make love to her husband, but has fairly brutal sex fantasies and eventually works as a prostitute in a brothel to satisfy herself, while still remaining chaste in her marriage (hot right?). Deneuve’s performance was incredible. She reminded me a lot of the Jewish girl in Inglourious Basterds for some reason. This film definitely will warrant another watch as well as a continued exploration of Buñuel’s films.
