I watched Exit Through the Gift Shop the other day finally. It’s really cool if you haven’t seen it. I’ve never been one to know about graffiti and that sort of “underground-y” type stuff, but it was fascinating.
I especially liked the whole “OBEY” thing (Space Invader was another one). For those who don’t know, this guy Shepard Fairey basically just puts this image (like in the pic) up in random places around the world. It doesn’t really mean a whole lot of anything but the idea is that it will keep popping up. People can make of it what they will, but the goal is to get people curious and kind of more aware of their surroundings.
I’m very much on board with this idea, like how you see stuff written in the bathroom in some bar and wonder where it came from and what led that person to write it (Why is Jenny a slut? Will she really sleep with anyone?). Or when you see drawings on desks/buses. And then the times I see the same image (like the OBEY thing) it makes me feel like there’s some sort of connection with that person. They were in the same place that I was more than once. The world gets a little bit smaller.
I need to come up with an image (*adds to list of all things I pretend I’m gonna actually do).
